Receipt of Preservation magazine is a benefit
of membership in the National Trust, the only national, private
organization chartered by Congress to encourage public participation
in the preservation of sites, buildings, and objects significant
in American history. Trust programs and publications are made
possible in part by membership dues and contributions. Articles
and essays published in the magazine are works of journalism and
not the official policy of the National Trust.
Editorial guidelines: The magazine does not
accept unsolicited manuscripts, although the editors do review
query letters from established writers if accompanied by several
previously published clips. Unsolicited photographs must be accompanied
by a self-addressed, stamped envelope; however, the magazine assumes
no responsibility for such photographs. Please do not send unsolicited
slides.
The magazine's launching point is architecture, but it is also,
as the judges of the National Magazine Award write, about "politics,
art, history, places, and people
Preservation tells
the stories of extraordinary buildings and sites all over the
world."
Membership: A one-year individual membership
in the National Trust for Historic Preservation is $20 ($24 for
family membership) and includes receipt of Preservation
magazine and free admission to all National Trust museum properties,
except Kykuit. Of the total amount of base dues, $6 is for subscription
to Preservation. For new memberships, renewals, or change
of address, write to Membership
Department, 1785 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.
20036, call (800) 944-6847, or send an e-mail to members@nthp.org.
Internships: Interns work closely with editors
and help in many aspects of the production process. Duties include
fact checking, research, corresponding with readers and writers,
and, depending on ability and desire, writing brief news stories
for both the print and online editions.
Internships vary in duration and are frequently
used for college credit. A summer position is available to current
students and recent graduates. The deadline for applications is
March 31.
A small stipend is available to long-term interns
who have graduated from college and wish to remain with the magazine
for a year. Summer and short-term interns and those still in college
are generally not paid.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Candidates
should send a resume, previously published clips or academic writing
samples, and a letter of introduction that includes the desired
length of employment as well as journalistic and other aspirations
to Sudip Bose, Preservation, 1785 Massachusetts Ave.,
NW, Washington, DC, 20036.
