TRANSITIONS

THREATENED 1837 NICHOLSON HOUSE, Erie, Pa.: Federal brick house listed in National Register, formerly tavern and inn, threatened by encroaching development, including Wal-Mart

1967 MORRIS A. MECHANIC THEATRE, Baltimore: future of Brutalist, 1,600-seat theater in doubt, as owner seeks to convert structure into mixed-use complex of retail and residential units; seats and other interior elements have already been removed and structure may be encased in new construction

1900 WADSWORTH CHAPEL, Los Angeles: oldest structure on Wilshire Boulevard, which once housed two sanctuaries, one Catholic, one Protestant, in severe decline since 1971 earthquake; funds unavailable to save National Register-listed building

SAVED 1947 DEL MARCOS HOTEL, Palm Springs, Calif.: 16-room motel designed by William Cody, known for his modernist desert architecture, undergoing renovation after years of decline

RESTORED 1851 CHARLES STREET JAIL, Boston: five-year, $150 million restoration has transformed Beacon Hill landmark overlooking Charles River into Liberty Hotel, preserving, among other features, former jail's granite exterior and 90-foot-tall central rotunda; guest rooms now occupy jail as well as new 16-story tower

1927 CITY HALL, Pasadena, Calif.: local landmark with six-story circular tower capped by dome and cupola, listed in National Register and featured in films and television programs, reopened earlier this year after $117 million renovation and seismic retrofit, among costliest projects in city's history

1806 BEDFORD SPRINGS HOTEL, Bedford Springs, Pa.: famed resort, once popular as luxury destination and named National Historic Landmark in 1984, recently reopened after three-year, $120 million restoration
